The Alinari Museum of Photography

The Alinari Museum of Photography overlooks Piazza Santa Maria Novella in Florence. It is housed in the old hospital San Paolo, founded in the 13th century as a shelter for travelers coming to Florence. In the second half of the 15th century, the porch with its ten arcades was built and decorated with Andrea Della Robbia's pottery, inspired to the famous Ospedale degli Innocenti by Brunelleschi.

The Alinari Museum was initially located at Palazzo Ruccellai in Florence and it opened its doors in 1985. The Alinari Museum offers its visitors an extremely rich and precious bank of historical pictures, with more than 4 million pictures, taken not only by the famous Alinari brothers, but also by a number of photographers well known in Europe and worldwide. The Alinari institution is in charge of the museum's maintenance and restoration.

Besides organizing photographic exhibitions, the Alinari Museum also offers the opportunity to admire ancient cameras, printing machines and vintage objects such as frames and albums. A true journey into the history of photography.

The Alinari brothers (Leopoldo, Giuseppe and Romualdo) established their firm in 1852 in Florence, providing photographic services. The Fratelli Alinari firm (Alinari Brothers) is the oldest firm in the world still active in the field of photography.

Since its birth, the company has remarkably grown and, thanks to the recent joint venture with Sole 24 ORE (Italian economic newspaper), called "Alinari 24 ORE", today it runs an immense image bank (more than 41 million images) which includes pictures from famous archives such as Touring Club Italiano, Istituto Luce, Archivio Ansaldo and many others.
