Florence Monuments: Santa Maria NovellaThe Basilica of Santa Maria Novella stands in its namesake piazza and constituted a point of reference in Florence for the Mendicant and Dominican orders.
The marble facade of Santa Maria Novella, only completed in 1920, is amongst one of the most important artworks of the Florentine Renaissance.
Particularly important was the intervention by Leon Battista Alberti, who added to the previous gothic structures, harmonising the new part with the ancient part through the use of marble inlays.
The Crucifix by Giotto placed at the bottom of the main nave at a height of 45m has enormous visual and emotional impact. After a long period of restoration, it was relocated to more or less the same position where it would have been up until 1421.
On the opposite facade, the fresco painting of the nativity by Sandro Botticelli is visible, whilst on the left facade the Holy Trinity by Masaccio stands out. This artwork was an experiment on using the perspective and represents an admirable example of the implementation of new stylistic parameters in painting, of equal value to the architectural milestones of Brunelleschi and the sculptural ones of Donatello.
