Florence Monuments: Uffizi gallery

The Galleria degli Uffizi ("Uffizi Gallery") in Florence is one of the most important museums in the world and is situated inside an antique building, which in itself is worth a visit. The Uffizi Gallery was in fact commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici to the design of Giorgio Vasari.
The building is home to an immense and marvellous collection of art, attracting thousands of tourists to Florence from all over the world each year.
Amongst the many artworks on display, those not to be missed include the "Maestà di Ognissanti" painting by Giotto, created at the beginning of the 14th century and marking a break away from previous artistic tradition. This was a turning point in religious art, defined by Vasari as the remarkable beginnings of the Renaissance.
Worthy of praise are the Annunciation by Martini, the "Adoration of the Magi" by Gentile da Fabriano and the Baptism of Christ by Verrocchio, the triumph of early Renaissance realism.
The "Double portrait" of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino by Piero della Francesca introduces visitors to the halls dedicated to Botticelli, with masterworks such as "Spring" and "The Birth of Venus".
Fantastic are the artworks of the High Renaissance, such as the Madonna of the Goldfinch by Raffaello, Madonna with the Long Neck by Parmigianino and Venus of Urbino by Tiziano. These artworks mark the passage of time from a more conceptual artistic period towards Mannerism.
Endless geniuses are on display, from Leonardo Da Vinci with the "Adoration of the Magi", an uncompleted artwork by Leonardo which signalled a new era of religious art characterised by drama and independence, to the Tondo Doni by Michelangelo Buonarroti, signifying the culmination of Renaissance era innovation, a colourful and breathtaking painting characterised by the artist's emotional strength.
